What Kybella is

Kybella is a purified form of deoxycholic acid, a molecule the body naturally uses to break down dietary fat. Injected into the fat beneath the chin, it destroys fat cells, which the body then clears over the following weeks.

It is FDA-approved to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat below the chin. Because treated fat cells are destroyed, they don't return, and results are long-lasting once you reach the look you want.

What it treats

  • Fullness under the chin (submental fat)
  • A softened jaw-to-neck angle

✦ You're at or near a stable weight

The Experience

What to expect, step by step.

01

Consultation

Dr. Arsenous assesses the fat under your chin and your skin elasticity, and confirms Kybella is the right fit.

02

Marking

A grid is marked on the skin to guide even placement.

03

04

Series

Most patients need two to four sessions spaced at least a month apart.

Recovery & results

Swelling is expected and can be noticeable for one to two weeks, especially after the first session. Bruising, numbness, redness, and firmness under the chin are also common and resolve with time.

Results develop over four to six weeks after each session as the body clears the treated fat. Most patients need two to four sessions, and up to six may be used.

Risks & limitations

  • Swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of firmness under the chin.
  • Rarely, injury to a nerve in the jaw, causing an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness, usually temporary.
  • Difficulty swallowing, which is uncommon and usually temporary.
  • Kybella removes fat but does not tighten loose skin; significant skin laxity may need a different approach.

The treated fat cells are destroyed and don't return. Significant weight gain can still enlarge remaining fat cells.

Swelling is normal and can last one to two weeks, often most noticeable after the first session. Plan important events accordingly.

Kybella avoids surgery but needs several sessions. Liposuction removes more fat in one procedure. Dr. Arsenous will recommend the better option for your anatomy.
